Narrative:
The aircraft was being operated as a demonstration flight. The pilot at the controls was sic qualified and was taxiing the aircraft. Our clearance was to taxi to runway 22R. After ensuring the taxi instructions were understood, I went 'head down' to complete the before takeoff checklist and program the FMS. During this time, the pilot taxiing proceeded across runway 22R and stopped short of runway 22L. Ground control informed us of our error and changed runway assignments. The chain of events started with a pilot who was unfamiliar with the avionics of this particular model taxiing while attempting to learn the system. At the same time, the unfamiliar crew pairing, coupled with the attempt to demonstration the aircraft, allowed a breakdown in communications. The event then occurred when the more 'situationally aware' pilot was not actively monitoring the course of the flight. A tertiary, and not significant factor, was the runway markings and wide open taxiway which do not initially appear to be a runway to the 'otherwise occupied.' in the future, I will: ensure all taxi instructions are completely understood, not allow myself to be rushed just to make the demonstration seem effortless, monitor the operation at all times, and utilize the time when the aircraft is stopped to program system and run checklists.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF C560 CITATION ON DEMO FLT CROSSES RWY TO WHICH THEY ARE CLRED TO TAXI AND HOLD. GND CTLR INFORMS THEM OF THE ERROR AND ISSUES NEW CLRNC.
Narrative: THE ACFT WAS BEING OPERATED AS A DEMONSTRATION FLT. THE PLT AT THE CTLS WAS SIC QUALIFIED AND WAS TAXIING THE ACFT. OUR CLRNC WAS TO TAXI TO RWY 22R. AFTER ENSURING THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WERE UNDERSTOOD, I WENT 'HEAD DOWN' TO COMPLETE THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST AND PROGRAM THE FMS. DURING THIS TIME, THE PLT TAXIING PROCEEDED ACROSS RWY 22R AND STOPPED SHORT OF RWY 22L. GND CTL INFORMED US OF OUR ERROR AND CHANGED RWY ASSIGNMENTS. THE CHAIN OF EVENTS STARTED WITH A PLT WHO WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THE AVIONICS OF THIS PARTICULAR MODEL TAXIING WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LEARN THE SYS. AT THE SAME TIME, THE UNFAMILIAR CREW PAIRING, COUPLED WITH THE ATTEMPT TO DEMO THE ACFT, ALLOWED A BREAKDOWN IN COMS. THE EVENT THEN OCCURRED WHEN THE MORE 'SITUATIONALLY AWARE' PLT WAS NOT ACTIVELY MONITORING THE COURSE OF THE FLT. A TERTIARY, AND NOT SIGNIFICANT FACTOR, WAS THE RWY MARKINGS AND WIDE OPEN TXWY WHICH DO NOT INITIALLY APPEAR TO BE A RWY TO THE 'OTHERWISE OCCUPIED.' IN THE FUTURE, I WILL: ENSURE ALL TAXI INSTRUCTIONS ARE COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD, NOT ALLOW MYSELF TO BE RUSHED JUST TO MAKE THE DEMO SEEM EFFORTLESS, MONITOR THE OP AT ALL TIMES, AND UTILIZE THE TIME WHEN THE ACFT IS STOPPED TO PROGRAM SYS AND RUN CHKLISTS.
