Narrative:
I was cruising at 2500 ft in cdw airspace, in contact with cdw tower. During a scan, I leaned forward to see around my front seat passenger, and observed a 2-ENG bizjet taking evasive action to avoid me. He was at my 3-4 O'clock position. He turned and crossed behind me. I commented to cdw that we'd had a close encounter with a jet and was advised he was probably IFR into teb, whose approach crosses cdw airspace. I had no warning of the jet's presence. My aircraft was functioning fully normally, except for a report from pvd tower (where I'd just departed) that mode C was inoperative. This was later confirmed upon my inquiry to new york approach during flight over central connecticut en route to mmu.

Title: PLT OF A C172 WAS STARTLED TO OBSERVE A BIZJET TAKING EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID HIM WHEN ENRTE TRANSITING A CLASS B AIRSPACE. HOWEVER, ATC HAD PREVIOUSLY INFORMED HIM THAT THEY DID NOT OBSERVE HIS MODE C READOUT, WHICH WAS LATER CONFIRMED BY APCH CTL.
