Narrative:

Departed sjc runway 30L on the loupe 9 SID. After turning to 120 degree heading, was cleared to turn right at pilot's discretion to cross the VOR at 12000 ft. After frequency change to ZOA, the clearance was to cross the VOR at or above 12000 ft then maintain FL230. I have flown this SID many, many times over the yrs -- and knew what to expect from ATC. Today, we were full of people, cargo, and extra fuel. I turned right too soon and was only able to cross the VOR at a little over 11000 ft. The first officer advised center of this a few mi prior to the fix (and the reply was 'roger, best rate through 14000 ft'). Next time, I'll be more performance conscious and allow a little extra room on top of that.
