Narrative:
I was doing takeoffs and lndgs to runway 5 using standard left traffic when a PA28 reported right traffic to runway 5. I was on downwind looking for the traffic. He called right base as I was turning left base. I then called left base still not seeing the PA28 and thinking that he was further out than I. Then we both turned close in final at the same time with him slightly ahead of me. I had to go around and pass him above and to the right, 75-100 ft horizontal and 100 ft vertical.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RV6A ON L DOWNWIND TURNED BASE LEG ABOUT SAME TIME A PA28 TURNED R BASE AT AN UNCTLED ARPT. THEY WERE AWARE OF EACH OTHER'S EXISTENCE AND TURNED BASE LEG ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY. AN NMAC RESULTED. R-HAND TFC IS NOT SPECIFIED FOR THIS ARPT.
Narrative: I WAS DOING TKOFS AND LNDGS TO RWY 5 USING STANDARD L TFC WHEN A PA28 RPTED R TFC TO RWY 5. I WAS ON DOWNWIND LOOKING FOR THE TFC. HE CALLED R BASE AS I WAS TURNING L BASE. I THEN CALLED L BASE STILL NOT SEEING THE PA28 AND THINKING THAT HE WAS FURTHER OUT THAN I. THEN WE BOTH TURNED CLOSE IN FINAL AT THE SAME TIME WITH HIM SLIGHTLY AHEAD OF ME. I HAD TO GAR AND PASS HIM ABOVE AND TO THE R, 75-100 FT HORIZ AND 100 FT VERT.
