Narrative:
I had just picked up aircraft prior to this trip from the avionics shop at cgf. The HSI and flight director were not tracking the course selected. While on final into dtw, the command bars (fdi) and heading selector (HSI) went off course to the right, 20 degrees. I was in the clouds and reported the failure to controllers. They canceled my approach clearance. I climbed to new heading and altitude and requested a return to cleveland. I meant to say cgf airport. I was then cleared again for the approach, but into the wrong airport. I didn't realize it until they gave me the tower frequency. Both airports have a runway 23. I had ground contact all during this time. The controller said I should have told him what airport I wanted. But I thought my flight plan would automatically take me back to my departure airport since I never canceled my flight plan.

Title: SMA PLT MAKES A MISSED APCH AT DTW WHEN HER HSI WENT FULL DEFLECTION, WITH THE FLT DIRECTOR FOLLOWING THE BAD SIGNAL. WHEN REQUESTING A DIVERSION ARPT SHE WANTED TO SAY HER DEP ARPT, CGF. INSTEAD, SHE MISSPOKE AND ASKED FOR CLEVELAND. WHEN SWITCHING TO CLE TWR SHE REALIZED HER ERROR.
Narrative: I HAD JUST PICKED UP ACFT PRIOR TO THIS TRIP FROM THE AVIONICS SHOP AT CGF. THE HSI AND FLT DIRECTOR WERE NOT TRACKING THE COURSE SELECTED. WHILE ON FINAL INTO DTW, THE COMMAND BARS (FDI) AND HDG SELECTOR (HSI) WENT OFF COURSE TO THE R, 20 DEGS. I WAS IN THE CLOUDS AND RPTED THE FAILURE TO CTLRS. THEY CANCELED MY APCH CLRNC. I CLBED TO NEW HDG AND ALT AND REQUESTED A RETURN TO CLEVELAND. I MEANT TO SAY CGF ARPT. I WAS THEN CLRED AGAIN FOR THE APCH, BUT INTO THE WRONG ARPT. I DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL THEY GAVE ME THE TWR FREQ. BOTH ARPTS HAVE A RWY 23. I HAD GND CONTACT ALL DURING THIS TIME. THE CTLR SAID I SHOULD HAVE TOLD HIM WHAT ARPT I WANTED. BUT I THOUGHT MY FLT PLAN WOULD AUTOMATICALLY TAKE ME BACK TO MY DEP ARPT SINCE I NEVER CANCELED MY FLT PLAN.
