Narrative:
Departed crw runway 23. After rotation and lift-off crw tower advised us that we had left a main wheel on runway 23. After 2 tower fly-by's to assess the situation, tower advised that outboard left main wheel had fallen off aircraft and remaining left inboard tire looked normal. After consulting with company dispatch, maintenance control and chief pilot we returned to dtw. We requested crash fire rescue equipment and landed on dtw's runway 21L without incident or accident. To prevent a reoccurrence -- possible faulty bearing or installation.
