Narrative:
The PIC was the owner of the airplane. I was an observer in the right front seat. On final approach, at approximately 50 ft AGL, the aircraft experienced the very rapid onset of a high rate of sink. The aircraft landed hard and short of the runway. After landing, the aircraft's directional control could not be maintained. The aircraft stopped off the runway on a grassy area. No one was injured.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF AN SMA SEL MADE A HARD LNDG JUST SHORT OF THE RWY RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF ACFT DIRECTIONAL CTL AND GOING OFF SIDE OF RWY INTO THE GRASS. NO RPTED ACFT DAMAGE.
