Narrative:
Heavy thunderstorms passed through mem airport. We initiated an ILS to runway 18R after cleared for a visual approach. Thunderstorm line on radar in aircraft was 4 or 5 mi south of airport moving south and east. By the time we descended to 500 ft AGL the flanking side of the line of thunderstorms had developed a tail of storms that we watched visually come up from the south of mem very rapidly to obscure our visual approach. That a visual approach and landing was no longer possible combined with 2 quickly transmitted microburst alerts broadcast from the tower and an almost simultaneous 15 KT performance increasing airspeed change caused us to initiate a missed approach as depicted and amended by memphis tower. Another aircraft was approaching mem visually to runway 27 and also initiated a missed approach.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC9 PIC PERFORMS A MISSED APCH AS HE RECOGNIZED A LOW LEVEL WINDSHEAR AFFECTING HIS AIRSPD AND TWR CTLR ISSUED A MICROBURST ALERT. ACFT WAS MAKING AN ILS APCH NEAR A LINE OF TSTMS.
Narrative: HVY TSTMS PASSED THROUGH MEM ARPT. WE INITIATED AN ILS TO RWY 18R AFTER CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH. TSTM LINE ON RADAR IN ACFT WAS 4 OR 5 MI S OF ARPT MOVING S AND E. BY THE TIME WE DSNDED TO 500 FT AGL THE FLANKING SIDE OF THE LINE OF TSTMS HAD DEVELOPED A TAIL OF STORMS THAT WE WATCHED VISUALLY COME UP FROM THE S OF MEM VERY RAPIDLY TO OBSCURE OUR VISUAL APCH. THAT A VISUAL APCH AND LNDG WAS NO LONGER POSSIBLE COMBINED WITH 2 QUICKLY XMITTED MICROBURST ALERTS BROADCAST FROM THE TWR AND AN ALMOST SIMULTANEOUS 15 KT PERFORMANCE INCREASING AIRSPD CHANGE CAUSED US TO INITIATE A MISSED APCH AS DEPICTED AND AMENDED BY MEMPHIS TWR. ANOTHER ACFT WAS APCHING MEM VISUALLY TO RWY 27 AND ALSO INITIATED A MISSED APCH.
