Narrative:
While changing 6 cylinders on an IO520 engine, I also removed the magnetos and just as a matter of good practice, complied with airworthiness directive 96-12-07 (impulse coupling check for wear). However, I forgot to sign off the airworthiness directive in the logbook. I made a note on my status board that the airworthiness directive wasn't due for another 500 hours and didn't think anything more about it until now going through the logs with an FAA inspector. I am sure that the difference between the current tachometer time and the previously recorded compliance with airworthiness directive 96-12-07 would show about 50 hours overdue. The airworthiness directive was accomplished but not signed off. Changing the 6 cylinders and the other engine inspections for detonation and internal damage (bad fuel) and dealing with the record keeping for litigation involved with the fueling incident occupied much of my time and I forgot to review my notes and sign off the airworthiness directive.
