Narrative:
I was flying south in traffic watch C172, other traffic watch company C172 was flying west. The WX was MVFR with 1900 ft broken and 10 mi on surface about 6 mi in-flight, some light mist and the sun coming up the horizon. The tower was busy with several IFR departures and arriving traffic. The other cessna and myself had been in visual contact earlier but had been 10 mi apart and lost visual. I was looking for departing traffic to the west when the other person with me said 'there's the other cessna about 200 ft above us.' when I looked up, they were gone. The other pilot asked the tower if that was me under them. I answered it was and she said that was close. We obviously didn't want to be that close and usually do a better job of keeping separated. We were concerned and have spoken to local controllers and devised ways to avoid sits like this again -- including monitoring another frequency we can keep track of each other better. We work for different companies but are all local pilots.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C172 TFC WATCH ACFT HAD VISUAL CONTACT WITH C172 ANOTHER TFC WATCH ACFT EARLIER AT 10 MI. OBSERVER CALLED TFC DIRECTLY OVERHEAD AT 200 FT. RPTR WAS IN CONTACT WITH LOU TWR AND THE TWR CONFIRMED IT WAS CLOSE. DISCUSSION WITH OTHER PLT RESULTED IN DECISION TO MONITOR A FREQ TO KEEP TRACK OF EACH OTHER.
Narrative: I WAS FLYING S IN TFC WATCH C172, OTHER TFC WATCH COMPANY C172 WAS FLYING W. THE WX WAS MVFR WITH 1900 FT BROKEN AND 10 MI ON SURFACE ABOUT 6 MI INFLT, SOME LIGHT MIST AND THE SUN COMING UP THE HORIZON. THE TWR WAS BUSY WITH SEVERAL IFR DEPS AND ARRIVING TFC. THE OTHER CESSNA AND MYSELF HAD BEEN IN VISUAL CONTACT EARLIER BUT HAD BEEN 10 MI APART AND LOST VISUAL. I WAS LOOKING FOR DEPARTING TFC TO THE W WHEN THE OTHER PERSON WITH ME SAID 'THERE'S THE OTHER CESSNA ABOUT 200 FT ABOVE US.' WHEN I LOOKED UP, THEY WERE GONE. THE OTHER PLT ASKED THE TWR IF THAT WAS ME UNDER THEM. I ANSWERED IT WAS AND SHE SAID THAT WAS CLOSE. WE OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T WANT TO BE THAT CLOSE AND USUALLY DO A BETTER JOB OF KEEPING SEPARATED. WE WERE CONCERNED AND HAVE SPOKEN TO LCL CTLRS AND DEVISED WAYS TO AVOID SITS LIKE THIS AGAIN -- INCLUDING MONITORING ANOTHER FREQ WE CAN KEEP TRACK OF EACH OTHER BETTER. WE WORK FOR DIFFERENT COMPANIES BUT ARE ALL LCL PLTS.
