Narrative:
Between riw-cpr there was a lot of convective activity, a C208 was ahead of me at 11000 ft and I leveled off at 10000 ft. I caught an updraft of 3000 FPM and called center to verify altitude while I was trying to maintain 10000 ft and they send 10000 ft, but I was going up at 3000 FPM on the vsi with power off. Altitude alert went off at ZLC since there was no separation. They have me on tape saying what had happened also. It also happened so quick. There was no time to request a block altitude either. To make this not happen again, is to create some way to find these updrafts and downdrafts and put this equipment out to the aviation community so pilots don't have these problems in the future, because there is no way to see the updrafts or downdrafts with thunderstorms in GA aircraft.
