Narrative:
Departed lga on the lga 7 departure with a whitestone climb. After takeoff, turned to 175 degrees as specified in the SID. First officer was flying. I called departure. Controller said 'turn to 090 degrees, climb to 12000 ft.' I read back '090 degrees on the heading and climb to 12000 ft.' first officer confirmed he heard the same thing. After several mins heading 090 degrees, controller said 'you are heading 090 degrees, you should be heading 290 degrees.' I told controller 'I read back 090 degrees to you.' nothing further was said concerning this. Controller gave new instructions 'turn to 340 degrees and level at 10000 ft.' we complied and were switched to another sector. There is a definite problem with the phrases 'turn to 090 degrees' versus the phrase 'turn 290 degrees.'

Title: B737-300 LGA 7 SID, WHITESTONE CLB. DEP CTLR SAID 'TURN TO 090 DEGS, CLB TO 12000 FT. CLRNC READ BACK '090 DEGS.' CTLR QUERIED THE HDG AFTER SEVERAL MINS AND ADVISED SHOULD BE ON 290 DEG HDG. CTLR ISSUED HDG 340 DEGS MAINTAIN 10000 FT. NO FURTHER COMMENTS.
