Narrative:

While descending to 13000 ft northeast of ziter intersection, ATC called traffic at 2 O'clock, level 12000 ft. Both crew members were looking for the traffic when the altitude alerter advised us that the altitude pre-select had failed to stop the descent at 13000 ft. PF quickly uncoupled and corrected before center called and asked for altitude verification. The electronic gadgets don't always work and at least this time it failed when we were counting on it. Better vigilance called for.
