Narrative:
ATC facility: bos tower. Location: runway 22L runway approach end. While cleared to taxi to runway 22R via taxiway north we received a call from tower to change runway to runway 22L. We understood this to be a clearance to taxi to runway 22L with a crossing of runway 22R at the approach end. While crossing runway 22R (which is only a departure runway during this operation) we received a call from tower to cross runway 22R and taxi to runway 22L and contact bos tower on 119.1. This was confusing since we thought we were already cleared to runway 22L. At no time was there any danger to any aircraft as we crossed at the approach end and this runway was only being used for departures. There was a king air in position on runway 22R which normally the tower instructs the runway 22R propellers to taxi in position and hold and pull up to allow aircraft to taxi behind them. Therefore the situation looked perfectly normal except for the radio call while crossing the runway. In the future I will make sure we get verification on all runway xings that we were not just immediately cleared to make.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A SUPER MD80 FAILED TO OBTAIN TAXI INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO TAXIING ACROSS AN ACTIVE RWY ENRTE TO ASSIGNED RWY. CONFLICTED WITH ACFT HOLDING IN POS FOR TKOF.
Narrative: ATC FACILITY: BOS TWR. LOCATION: RWY 22L RWY APCH END. WHILE CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 22R VIA TXWY N WE RECEIVED A CALL FROM TWR TO CHANGE RWY TO RWY 22L. WE UNDERSTOOD THIS TO BE A CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 22L WITH A XING OF RWY 22R AT THE APCH END. WHILE XING RWY 22R (WHICH IS ONLY A DEP RWY DURING THIS OP) WE RECEIVED A CALL FROM TWR TO CROSS RWY 22R AND TAXI TO RWY 22L AND CONTACT BOS TWR ON 119.1. THIS WAS CONFUSING SINCE WE THOUGHT WE WERE ALREADY CLRED TO RWY 22L. AT NO TIME WAS THERE ANY DANGER TO ANY ACFT AS WE CROSSED AT THE APCH END AND THIS RWY WAS ONLY BEING USED FOR DEPS. THERE WAS A KING AIR IN POS ON RWY 22R WHICH NORMALLY THE TWR INSTRUCTS THE RWY 22R PROPS TO TAXI IN POS AND HOLD AND PULL UP TO ALLOW ACFT TO TAXI BEHIND THEM. THEREFORE THE SIT LOOKED PERFECTLY NORMAL EXCEPT FOR THE RADIO CALL WHILE XING THE RWY. IN THE FUTURE I WILL MAKE SURE WE GET VERIFICATION ON ALL RWY XINGS THAT WE WERE NOT JUST IMMEDIATELY CLRED TO MAKE.
