Narrative:
Bos departure control cleared us from 4000 ft to 5000 ft. I (the PNF) set 5000 ft in the altitude window, pointed and called '5000 ft' to which the copilot responded and started a climb. At 4500 ft I called '5000 ft to go' and noticed he was climbing at 1500 FPM. At 4800 ft I firmly called '5000 ft' and helped push to nose over to leveloff but we overshot our assigned altitude by 450 ft. Later, the first officer said he thought we were cleared to 10000 ft as it is quite common when leaving bos to the northwest to be cleared from 4000 ft to 10000 ft. The PF responded to all 3 altitude callouts but was mentally thinking 10000 ft. Supplemental information from acn 372280: I was concerned with maneuvering slightly to avoid some clouds and did not point to the altitude selector and confirm audibly that we were going to 5000 ft. In my mind we were going to 10000 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FO OF AN LTT TURBOPROP OVERSHOT CLB ALT ON DEP DUE TO A MIND SET THAT HE WAS CLRED TO THE USUAL HIGHER ALT. THE CAPT HELPED HIM LEVEL OFF AND RETURN TO ASSIGNED ALT.
Narrative: BOS DEP CTL CLRED US FROM 4000 FT TO 5000 FT. I (THE PNF) SET 5000 FT IN THE ALT WINDOW, POINTED AND CALLED '5000 FT' TO WHICH THE COPLT RESPONDED AND STARTED A CLB. AT 4500 FT I CALLED '5000 FT TO GO' AND NOTICED HE WAS CLBING AT 1500 FPM. AT 4800 FT I FIRMLY CALLED '5000 FT' AND HELPED PUSH TO NOSE OVER TO LEVELOFF BUT WE OVERSHOT OUR ASSIGNED ALT BY 450 FT. LATER, THE FO SAID HE THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO 10000 FT AS IT IS QUITE COMMON WHEN LEAVING BOS TO THE NW TO BE CLRED FROM 4000 FT TO 10000 FT. THE PF RESPONDED TO ALL 3 ALT CALLOUTS BUT WAS MENTALLY THINKING 10000 FT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 372280: I WAS CONCERNED WITH MANEUVERING SLIGHTLY TO AVOID SOME CLOUDS AND DID NOT POINT TO THE ALT SELECTOR AND CONFIRM AUDIBLY THAT WE WERE GOING TO 5000 FT. IN MY MIND WE WERE GOING TO 10000 FT.
