Narrative:
I was the captain of air carrier flight abc from cle-den. We were cleared to taxi from concourse Z, spot X, to 'runway 23L via taxiway U, runway 28, hold short of runway 23L.' although unfamiliar with the airport, and the unusual clearance to taxi on a runway to hold short of an intersecting runway, the taxi was uneventful. WX conditions were clear, good visibility, in daylight hours. Taxiing wbound on runway 28, it was my intention to hold well short of the runway 23L edge line, which was in my view and the focus of my taxi. Not being accustomed to seeing a yellow hold short line on a runway, I proceeded across the hold short line to my intended stop point until alerted by my copilot. Although I stopped well short of runway 23L, about half the aircraft was across the hold line. Shortly thereafter, we were cleared for takeoff of runway 23L, with no mention by ATC of our crossing to hold line. There was no encroachment (ie, crossing the runway edge line) of runway 23L. In addition to better diligence on my part, I believe more explicit ATC instructions and better airport markings could have made this situation avoidable.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AT CLE, A B737-500 TAXIES OUT FOR TKOF ON RWY 23L. PLT IS UNAWARE THAT THE HOLD SHORT LINES FOR RWY 23L ARE DRAWN ON RWY 28. PLT CROSSES PART WAY OVER HOLD SHORT LINES BUT NOT ALL OF ACFT GOES ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINES.
Narrative: I WAS THE CAPT OF ACR FLT ABC FROM CLE-DEN. WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI FROM CONCOURSE Z, SPOT X, TO 'RWY 23L VIA TXWY U, RWY 28, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23L.' ALTHOUGH UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT, AND THE UNUSUAL CLRNC TO TAXI ON A RWY TO HOLD SHORT OF AN INTERSECTING RWY, THE TAXI WAS UNEVENTFUL. WX CONDITIONS WERE CLR, GOOD VISIBILITY, IN DAYLIGHT HRS. TAXIING WBOUND ON RWY 28, IT WAS MY INTENTION TO HOLD WELL SHORT OF THE RWY 23L EDGE LINE, WHICH WAS IN MY VIEW AND THE FOCUS OF MY TAXI. NOT BEING ACCUSTOMED TO SEEING A YELLOW HOLD SHORT LINE ON A RWY, I PROCEEDED ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE TO MY INTENDED STOP POINT UNTIL ALERTED BY MY COPLT. ALTHOUGH I STOPPED WELL SHORT OF RWY 23L, ABOUT HALF THE ACFT WAS ACROSS THE HOLD LINE. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF OF RWY 23L, WITH NO MENTION BY ATC OF OUR XING TO HOLD LINE. THERE WAS NO ENCROACHMENT (IE, XING THE RWY EDGE LINE) OF RWY 23L. IN ADDITION TO BETTER DILIGENCE ON MY PART, I BELIEVE MORE EXPLICIT ATC INSTRUCTIONS AND BETTER ARPT MARKINGS COULD HAVE MADE THIS SIT AVOIDABLE.
