Narrative:
Climbing out of atlanta, cleared to 14000 ft we were told by atl departure (125.70) to contact ZTL (133.6) at approximately XX40 local. Checked in with center, their reply was 'roger.' center then cleared us to FL220. At cruise approximately 40 mins later, at pxv VOR 55 NM south on the 132 degree radial heading to pxv VOR, we requested a lower altitude with ZTL (133.6) and the controller (which at this time was a different person) told us she has nothing on us and asked our position. We gave our position and she gave us a frequency for ZID that didn't work so we then looked one up (128.3) on our charts. The controller gave us a clearance to 11000 ft. We further investigated and found we flew through memphis sector without talking to anyone. I think what happened was when ZTL controllers switched shifts we were somehow forgotten about. The flight ended uneventfully in evv. I don't feel we did anything wrong, just wanted to report this for safety purposes.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LTT ACFT WASN'T SWITCHED TO NEXT CTR BY ZTL. FLC CALLED FOR LOWER ALT AND CTLR DIDN'T HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THEM UNTIL THEY ADVISED THEIR POS. THUS, THEY HAD TRANSITED ZME SPACE WITHOUT COM.
Narrative: CLBING OUT OF ATLANTA, CLRED TO 14000 FT WE WERE TOLD BY ATL DEP (125.70) TO CONTACT ZTL (133.6) AT APPROX XX40 LCL. CHKED IN WITH CTR, THEIR REPLY WAS 'ROGER.' CTR THEN CLRED US TO FL220. AT CRUISE APPROX 40 MINS LATER, AT PXV VOR 55 NM S ON THE 132 DEG RADIAL HDG TO PXV VOR, WE REQUESTED A LOWER ALT WITH ZTL (133.6) AND THE CTLR (WHICH AT THIS TIME WAS A DIFFERENT PERSON) TOLD US SHE HAS NOTHING ON US AND ASKED OUR POS. WE GAVE OUR POS AND SHE GAVE US A FREQ FOR ZID THAT DIDN'T WORK SO WE THEN LOOKED ONE UP (128.3) ON OUR CHARTS. THE CTLR GAVE US A CLRNC TO 11000 FT. WE FURTHER INVESTIGATED AND FOUND WE FLEW THROUGH MEMPHIS SECTOR WITHOUT TALKING TO ANYONE. I THINK WHAT HAPPENED WAS WHEN ZTL CTLRS SWITCHED SHIFTS WE WERE SOMEHOW FORGOTTEN ABOUT. THE FLT ENDED UNEVENTFULLY IN EVV. I DON'T FEEL WE DID ANYTHING WRONG, JUST WANTED TO RPT THIS FOR SAFETY PURPOSES.
