Narrative:
We were northbound on A300-sju-ewr at FL350. At approximately XA08Z we requested a deviation 20 NM west of course to avoid thunderstorms on the route in the vicinity of navigation position lacki. We made this call on the primary HF frequency for ZNY and then were told to stand by for clearance. After 10 mins we received no cell call or radio transmission on the primary frequency. We began the deviation west of course due to thunderstorm clouds which went up to at least FL400, associated with tropical storm ana. I made calls in the blind on both 130.55, caribbean route common, and 121.50, identing our position/altitude and deviation. I made 4 calls in total on these frequencys, and we also monitored the TCASII. After the deviation we returned to course by about XA26Z. Our widest deviation was 20 NM west. Our requested clearance via HF radio was never granted. I used my emergency authority/authorized due to the adverse WX on our intended route of flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR B757 FLC ATTEMPTED TO GET PERMISSION VIA HF RADIO TO DEVIATE AROUND TSTMS. AFTER WAITING A SHORT TIME, THE FLC BROADCAST ON VHF FREQS THAT THEY WERE DEVIATING USING THE CAPT'S COMMAND AUTH. THEY RETURNED TO COURSE A FEW MINS LATER.
Narrative: WE WERE NBOUND ON A300-SJU-EWR AT FL350. AT APPROX XA08Z WE REQUESTED A DEV 20 NM W OF COURSE TO AVOID TSTMS ON THE RTE IN THE VICINITY OF NAV POS LACKI. WE MADE THIS CALL ON THE PRIMARY HF FREQ FOR ZNY AND THEN WERE TOLD TO STAND BY FOR CLRNC. AFTER 10 MINS WE RECEIVED NO CELL CALL OR RADIO XMISSION ON THE PRIMARY FREQ. WE BEGAN THE DEV W OF COURSE DUE TO TSTM CLOUDS WHICH WENT UP TO AT LEAST FL400, ASSOCIATED WITH TROPICAL STORM ANA. I MADE CALLS IN THE BLIND ON BOTH 130.55, CARIBBEAN RTE COMMON, AND 121.50, IDENTING OUR POS/ALT AND DEV. I MADE 4 CALLS IN TOTAL ON THESE FREQS, AND WE ALSO MONITORED THE TCASII. AFTER THE DEV WE RETURNED TO COURSE BY ABOUT XA26Z. OUR WIDEST DEV WAS 20 NM W. OUR REQUESTED CLRNC VIA HF RADIO WAS NEVER GRANTED. I USED MY EMER AUTH DUE TO THE ADVERSE WX ON OUR INTENDED RTE OF FLT.
