Narrative:
Omega flight plan was for eliot intersection, direct etx, direct air. ATC route was eliot direct etx, J80, air. When we turned after etx to go to air, ATC told us to turn back to 'left for traffic' and asked why we were off J80. We advised of flight plan -- no further incident.

Title: FLC OF A HVT CARGO ACFT FAILED TO FOLLOW THEIR ACTUAL ATC CLRNC CAUSING ATC INTERVENTION TO QUESTION THEIR TURNING OFF AIRWAY FOR A DIRECT ROUTING AS ORIGINALLY FLT PLANNED.
Narrative: OMEGA FLT PLAN WAS FOR ELIOT INTXN, DIRECT ETX, DIRECT AIR. ATC RTE WAS ELIOT DIRECT ETX, J80, AIR. WHEN WE TURNED AFTER ETX TO GO TO AIR, ATC TOLD US TO TURN BACK TO 'L FOR TFC' AND ASKED WHY WE WERE OFF J80. WE ADVISED OF FLT PLAN -- NO FURTHER INCIDENT.
