Narrative:
Engine flameout. Unable to maintain altitude. Advised controller of need to descend but not why. Unable to maintain altitude and deviated before cleared (about 500 ft). We were vectored away from traffic and cleared to a lower altitude. As we descended and were able to restart the engine, a controller asked if we were having problems and I indicated we were 'ok at this time.' the controllers were very helpful but I should have indicated the problem to them right from the start.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WHEN 1 ENG FLAMED OUT AT HIGH ALT CRUISE, THE FLC OF A HANSA, MBB HFB 320, FAILED TO DECLARE AN EMER FOR AN IMMEDIATE DSCNT TO A LOWER ALT SINCE THEY COULD NOT HOLD ALT ON 1 ENG. CONSEQUENTLY, THEY DSNDED 500 FT FROM ASSIGNED PRIOR TO BEING CLRED.
Narrative: ENG FLAMEOUT. UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALT. ADVISED CTLR OF NEED TO DSND BUT NOT WHY. UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALT AND DEVIATED BEFORE CLRED (ABOUT 500 FT). WE WERE VECTORED AWAY FROM TFC AND CLRED TO A LOWER ALT. AS WE DSNDED AND WERE ABLE TO RESTART THE ENG, A CTLR ASKED IF WE WERE HAVING PROBS AND I INDICATED WE WERE 'OK AT THIS TIME.' THE CTLRS WERE VERY HELPFUL BUT I SHOULD HAVE INDICATED THE PROB TO THEM RIGHT FROM THE START.
