ARTCC radar controller cleared an LR60 to descend at pilot's discretion to FL240 and then was relieved for a break. 8 mins later the LR60 descended and had a conflict with an air carrier MD80 below him. The conflict alert activated and alerted the new sector controller of the potential conflict and evasive action was taken.

Clearance to FL240 was given to light transport Y at XA01 at his discretion. At XA07 I was relieved on the sector. At XA09 light transport Y started his descent to FL240 and separation was lost with air carrier X.
