Narrative:

I was cleared from the east ramp to runway 6, hold short. The airport diagram on the IAP plate did not appear to show a path to runway 6 that does not include the use of the approach end of intersecting runway 33. Upon reaching the hold short lines for runway 33, I stopped and did my run-up. I switched to tower and announced that the run-up was complete and my location (short of runway 33). He cleared me to taxi to runway 6 and hold short. This time I taxied onto runway 33, proceeded towards the intersection with runway 6, but did not see a hold short line. I stopped and reported my position. Tower saw where I was, said something to the effect that I wasn't where they expected me to be, but that I should hold and wait for arriving traffic and expect a taxiway (intersection?) departure. While holding short on runway 33, I looked to my left and saw the taxiway I was expected to be on and also noticed that I had done a near perfect job of putting myself parallel to the hold short line on that taxiway. Before the traffic landed I was cleared onto runway 6, position and hold. To avoid this confusion, I should have just announced that I was unfamiliar with how to get to runway 6 and asked for progressive taxi instructions. I think the strong, gusting winds and driving rain only added to my lack of judgement in not asking for additional information. While in position and holding on runway 6, I received a call from the tower asking me to continue holding for traffic, a twin cessna, on a 5 mi final. I responded in the affirmative, but then it dawned on me that, with the wind blowing from 070 degrees at 17 KTS, peak gusts 27 KTS, the arriving traffic was not likely to be landing on any runway other than runway 6. Not only that, but even if the arriving traffic was going to land on the intersecting runway, I was positioned right at its edge. I called the tower to note this, and they cleared me for an immediate departure. This situation probably occurred because of the confusion I created with my incorrect taxi procedures, as indicated in my description of the first incident.

Title: C172 PLT WAS CONFUSED ABOUT TAXI RTE AND ENDED UP ON A RWY AND APPARENTLY, DUE TO WX, TWR CTLR WAS UNABLE TO SEE RPTR ACFT. RPTR REALIZED AN ACFT ON APCH WOULD BE LNDG CLOSE ABEAM WHERE HE WAS STOPPED SO INFORMED TWR CTLR WHO CLRED HIM FOR AN IMMEDIATE DEP.

Narrative: I WAS CLRED FROM THE E RAMP TO RWY 6, HOLD SHORT. THE ARPT DIAGRAM ON THE IAP PLATE DID NOT APPEAR TO SHOW A PATH TO RWY 6 THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE THE USE OF THE APCH END OF INTERSECTING RWY 33. UPON REACHING THE HOLD SHORT LINES FOR RWY 33, I STOPPED AND DID MY RUN-UP. I SWITCHED TO TWR AND ANNOUNCED THAT THE RUN-UP WAS COMPLETE AND MY LOCATION (SHORT OF RWY 33). HE CLRED ME TO TAXI TO RWY 6 AND HOLD SHORT. THIS TIME I TAXIED ONTO RWY 33, PROCEEDED TOWARDS THE INTXN WITH RWY 6, BUT DID NOT SEE A HOLD SHORT LINE. I STOPPED AND RPTED MY POS. TWR SAW WHERE I WAS, SAID SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT THAT I WASN'T WHERE THEY EXPECTED ME TO BE, BUT THAT I SHOULD HOLD AND WAIT FOR ARRIVING TFC AND EXPECT A TXWY (INTXN?) DEP. WHILE HOLDING SHORT ON RWY 33, I LOOKED TO MY L AND SAW THE TXWY I WAS EXPECTED TO BE ON AND ALSO NOTICED THAT I HAD DONE A NEAR PERFECT JOB OF PUTTING MYSELF PARALLEL TO THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON THAT TXWY. BEFORE THE TFC LANDED I WAS CLRED ONTO RWY 6, POS AND HOLD. TO AVOID THIS CONFUSION, I SHOULD HAVE JUST ANNOUNCED THAT I WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH HOW TO GET TO RWY 6 AND ASKED FOR PROGRESSIVE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. I THINK THE STRONG, GUSTING WINDS AND DRIVING RAIN ONLY ADDED TO MY LACK OF JUDGEMENT IN NOT ASKING FOR ADDITIONAL INFO. WHILE IN POS AND HOLDING ON RWY 6, I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE TWR ASKING ME TO CONTINUE HOLDING FOR TFC, A TWIN CESSNA, ON A 5 MI FINAL. I RESPONDED IN THE AFFIRMATIVE, BUT THEN IT DAWNED ON ME THAT, WITH THE WIND BLOWING FROM 070 DEGS AT 17 KTS, PEAK GUSTS 27 KTS, THE ARRIVING TFC WAS NOT LIKELY TO BE LNDG ON ANY RWY OTHER THAN RWY 6. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT EVEN IF THE ARRIVING TFC WAS GOING TO LAND ON THE INTERSECTING RWY, I WAS POSITIONED RIGHT AT ITS EDGE. I CALLED THE TWR TO NOTE THIS, AND THEY CLRED ME FOR AN IMMEDIATE DEP. THIS SIT PROBABLY OCCURRED BECAUSE OF THE CONFUSION I CREATED WITH MY INCORRECT TAXI PROCS, AS INDICATED IN MY DESCRIPTION OF THE FIRST INCIDENT.
