Narrative:
On this day we were repositioning an aircraft from ewr to iso where the aircraft would undergo scheduled maintenance. Approaching iso our flight was handled by seymor johnson AFB. Approach control advised us we were #2 for the field behind a commuter airline that we reported (bae 31) in sight. We were vectored to follow this aircraft and just after being turned onto final for runway 5 cleared for the visual approach. Seymor AFB controller then asked us to contact iso tower. I called tower and reported established on final runway 5. Without acknowledging, tower asked me to report turning base for runway 5. Again I called tower, informed him that we were already established on final for runway 5. At about that same time, I caught a glimpse of a twin commanche on a dogleg base to final off to my right. The commanche pilot contemporaneously reported that he was executing a missed approach. Our flight was cleared to land runway 5. Poor communications between approach and tower allowed this near miss to happen. When I inquired, the tower controller said he was expecting us on base leg. Approach never apprised us of any other traffic, only that we were #2 for the field.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MDT ON A VISUAL APCH TO ISO STRAIGHT-IN TO RWY 5 SAW A PA30 ON A DOGLEG TO BASE FOR THE SAME RWY. THE TWR TOLD THE MDT TO RPT ON BASE LEG AND DIDN'T KNOW HE WAS COMING STRAIGHT IN. THE PA30 EXECUTED A MISSED APCH AND CAME IN CLOSE PROX TO THE MDT. RPTR ALLEGES POOR INTERFAC COORD BTWN THE TRACON AND THE TWR. SEE AND AVOID CONCEPT.
Narrative: ON THIS DAY WE WERE REPOSITIONING AN ACFT FROM EWR TO ISO WHERE THE ACFT WOULD UNDERGO SCHEDULED MAINT. APCHING ISO OUR FLT WAS HANDLED BY SEYMOR JOHNSON AFB. APCH CTL ADVISED US WE WERE #2 FOR THE FIELD BEHIND A COMMUTER AIRLINE THAT WE RPTED (BAE 31) IN SIGHT. WE WERE VECTORED TO FOLLOW THIS ACFT AND JUST AFTER BEING TURNED ONTO FINAL FOR RWY 5 CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH. SEYMOR AFB CTLR THEN ASKED US TO CONTACT ISO TWR. I CALLED TWR AND RPTED ESTABLISHED ON FINAL RWY 5. WITHOUT ACKNOWLEDGING, TWR ASKED ME TO RPT TURNING BASE FOR RWY 5. AGAIN I CALLED TWR, INFORMED HIM THAT WE WERE ALREADY ESTABLISHED ON FINAL FOR RWY 5. AT ABOUT THAT SAME TIME, I CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF A TWIN COMMANCHE ON A DOGLEG BASE TO FINAL OFF TO MY R. THE COMMANCHE PLT CONTEMPORANEOUSLY RPTED THAT HE WAS EXECUTING A MISSED APCH. OUR FLT WAS CLRED TO LAND RWY 5. POOR COMS BTWN APCH AND TWR ALLOWED THIS NEAR MISS TO HAPPEN. WHEN I INQUIRED, THE TWR CTLR SAID HE WAS EXPECTING US ON BASE LEG. APCH NEVER APPRISED US OF ANY OTHER TFC, ONLY THAT WE WERE #2 FOR THE FIELD.
