Narrative:
As we were climbing to FL290 at FL278, flight attendants called to tell us that there was smoke in the cabin. I leveled the aircraft off and gave the aircraft to the first officer and called for the checklist (smoke, abnormal, identify, removal). After we had donned our oxygen masks, we established communications and I decided to declare an emergency and return to slc. There were no indications on any of the cockpit indicators where the smoke was originating from. After going through the checklist, the smoke was still present. We descended to a lower altitude while the so raised the cabin pressure to 9500 ft. After approximately 25 mins the smoke finally dissipated. The approach was normal and the landing was uneventful. After returning to the gate, maintenance could not find or duplicate the abnormal. The flight had been dispatched with the #1 engine isolator valve closed since this aircraft had repeated write- ups concerning odors in the cabin. This was the first time that smoke had also appeared.

Title: FLC OF L1011 IS INFORMED BY FLT ATTENDANT THAT THERE IS SMOKE IN THE CABIN. OXYGEN MASKS DONNED, CHKLIST USED, DECLARE EMER AND RETURN TO SLC.
Narrative: AS WE WERE CLBING TO FL290 AT FL278, FLT ATTENDANTS CALLED TO TELL US THAT THERE WAS SMOKE IN THE CABIN. I LEVELED THE ACFT OFF AND GAVE THE ACFT TO THE FO AND CALLED FOR THE CHKLIST (SMOKE, ABNORMAL, IDENT, REMOVAL). AFTER WE HAD DONNED OUR OXYGEN MASKS, WE ESTABLISHED COMS AND I DECIDED TO DECLARE AN EMER AND RETURN TO SLC. THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS ON ANY OF THE COCKPIT INDICATORS WHERE THE SMOKE WAS ORIGINATING FROM. AFTER GOING THROUGH THE CHKLIST, THE SMOKE WAS STILL PRESENT. WE DSNDED TO A LOWER ALT WHILE THE SO RAISED THE CABIN PRESSURE TO 9500 FT. AFTER APPROX 25 MINS THE SMOKE FINALLY DISSIPATED. THE APCH WAS NORMAL AND THE LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL. AFTER RETURNING TO THE GATE, MAINT COULD NOT FIND OR DUPLICATE THE ABNORMAL. THE FLT HAD BEEN DISPATCHED WITH THE #1 ENG ISOLATOR VALVE CLOSED SINCE THIS ACFT HAD REPEATED WRITE- UPS CONCERNING ODORS IN THE CABIN. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT SMOKE HAD ALSO APPEARED.
