Narrative:
Centennial control granted permission to depart and fly to buckley AFB. While attempting to contact denver approach it was discovered the microphone button on the control yoke quit. The remote microphone was used to contact approach for clearance. A transponder identify was assigned and the controller issued a warning statement. I believed myself to be outside the 10 NM TCA circle. The controller vectored us to 170 degrees. I explained the attempt was to confirm an ELT report. While flying on 170 degree radial contact was made to cap communications, the ELT was found and shut off, therefore, after getting approved to depart the area, I headed eastbound, per flight plan, to brush (7v5). Flying altitude was 7500 ft tracking +/-031 degrees on the omni and LORAN. Cap radio communication near the 30 NM east boundary may have garbled the controller effort to switch transponder to VFR mode, but I contacted her and requested the change to transponder 1200 upon sighting ft morgan/brush at 30 mi out of brush to southwest. In the future flts I will use DME 117.9 for better navigation accuracy in den TCA.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C182 DEPARTS FROM APA, CO, ONLY TO FLY ALONG THE BORDER OF THE CLASS B AIRSPACE. THE TRACON CTLR GIVES WARNING OF CLASS B INTRUSION.
Narrative: CENTENNIAL CTL GRANTED PERMISSION TO DEPART AND FLY TO BUCKLEY AFB. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CONTACT DENVER APCH IT WAS DISCOVERED THE MIKE BUTTON ON THE CTL YOKE QUIT. THE REMOTE MIKE WAS USED TO CONTACT APCH FOR CLRNC. A XPONDER IDENT WAS ASSIGNED AND THE CTLR ISSUED A WARNING STATEMENT. I BELIEVED MYSELF TO BE OUTSIDE THE 10 NM TCA CIRCLE. THE CTLR VECTORED US TO 170 DEGS. I EXPLAINED THE ATTEMPT WAS TO CONFIRM AN ELT RPT. WHILE FLYING ON 170 DEG RADIAL CONTACT WAS MADE TO CAP COMS, THE ELT WAS FOUND AND SHUT OFF, THEREFORE, AFTER GETTING APPROVED TO DEPART THE AREA, I HEADED EBOUND, PER FLT PLAN, TO BRUSH (7V5). FLYING ALT WAS 7500 FT TRACKING +/-031 DEGS ON THE OMNI AND LORAN. CAP RADIO COM NEAR THE 30 NM E BOUNDARY MAY HAVE GARBLED THE CTLR EFFORT TO SWITCH XPONDER TO VFR MODE, BUT I CONTACTED HER AND REQUESTED THE CHANGE TO XPONDER 1200 UPON SIGHTING FT MORGAN/BRUSH AT 30 MI OUT OF BRUSH TO SW. IN THE FUTURE FLTS I WILL USE DME 117.9 FOR BETTER NAV ACCURACY IN DEN TCA.
