Narrative:

On climb we were on a published departure and climbing to FL140. We were given a heading 020 degrees for vector. I thought the heading was 200 degrees and started to turn left. The copilot corrected me and I reversed the turn. We were established in the turn to 020 degrees when we noticed another aircraft about 2000 ft above and descending on TCASII. At that point ATC instructed us to level at FL80 and also gave instructions to the other aircraft. TCASII gave a resolution advisory 'reduce climb' followed by 'monitor vertical speed' at about the same time center changed our instructions. Closest approach was 1500 ft. Vertical separation with significant lateral separation as well.
