Narrative:
The captain was flying the leg, he decided to take a short cut by turning west to get on course. Instead we should have turned northeast to go to the texico VOR and then proceed wbound on course. In the process of taking a short cut, he blew through our assigned altitude by 150 ft before I called him on it. By the time the controller asked us if we were going direct to the VOR, they deleted it from our routing. It doesn't pay to take short cuts around busy airspace. In this case, the captain took me by surprise in turning the wrong way.
