Narrative:
On climb out level at 5000 ft, heading 120 degrees, bay departure cleared us to 'climb crossing the sjc VOR at 12000 ft expect FL230.' while in the turn back to the sjc VOR we were reclred by bay approach to 'cross the sjc VOR at or above 12000 ft, climb and maintain FL230' and contact ZOA. We checked in with ZOA climbing to FL230. About 4 DME south of the sjc VOR at 14000 ft, ZOA questioned our altitude and we informed them bay approach had cleared us to climb above 12000 ft to FL230. ZOA reported there was no traffic in the area and we continued to climb normally. However, ZOA reported they had trouble with that clearance in the recent past.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR FLC IN AN MLG WERE ASKED BY THE ARTCC RADAR CTLR ABOUT THEIR ALT, WHICH WAS HIGHER THAN USUAL FOR THEIR SID. THEY REPLIED THAT THEY WERE CLRED HIGHER BY THE DEP CTLR. THERE WAS, APPARENTLY, NO CONFLICT.
Narrative: ON CLBOUT LEVEL AT 5000 FT, HDG 120 DEGS, BAY DEP CLRED US TO 'CLB XING THE SJC VOR AT 12000 FT EXPECT FL230.' WHILE IN THE TURN BACK TO THE SJC VOR WE WERE RECLRED BY BAY APCH TO 'CROSS THE SJC VOR AT OR ABOVE 12000 FT, CLB AND MAINTAIN FL230' AND CONTACT ZOA. WE CHKED IN WITH ZOA CLBING TO FL230. ABOUT 4 DME S OF THE SJC VOR AT 14000 FT, ZOA QUESTIONED OUR ALT AND WE INFORMED THEM BAY APCH HAD CLRED US TO CLB ABOVE 12000 FT TO FL230. ZOA RPTED THERE WAS NO TFC IN THE AREA AND WE CONTINUED TO CLB NORMALLY. HOWEVER, ZOA RPTED THEY HAD TROUBLE WITH THAT CLRNC IN THE RECENT PAST.
