Narrative:
Engine quit abeam alliance and I made an uneventful engine out approach. I was on regional frequency, VFR, through class B airspace and they were helpful with the afw tower frequency. Engine quit because fuel selector was on both off. All previous flts this type aircraft the fuel selector was found originally in both on. Apparently my expectation of both on was erroneously confirmed during preflight check and after engine failure. Both off was found after landing. I know better than to respond without carefully checking switch position during checklists. I'm embarrassed. This event re- emphasizes the need to return to basics with a new aircraft type. Checklists need to be verified carefully not just read. I suppose being an ATP airline type I didn't have the correct mindset for flying the light civilian type aircraft. I do now.

Title: ATP RATED PLT OF A C182 WAS FORCED TO LAND WHEN THE ENG QUIT DUE TO FUEL STARVATION. AFTER LNDG RPTR FOUND THE FUEL SELECTOR IN THE OFF POS.
Narrative: ENG QUIT ABEAM ALLIANCE AND I MADE AN UNEVENTFUL ENG OUT APCH. I WAS ON REGIONAL FREQ, VFR, THROUGH CLASS B AIRSPACE AND THEY WERE HELPFUL WITH THE AFW TWR FREQ. ENG QUIT BECAUSE FUEL SELECTOR WAS ON BOTH OFF. ALL PREVIOUS FLTS THIS TYPE ACFT THE FUEL SELECTOR WAS FOUND ORIGINALLY IN BOTH ON. APPARENTLY MY EXPECTATION OF BOTH ON WAS ERRONEOUSLY CONFIRMED DURING PREFLT CHK AND AFTER ENG FAILURE. BOTH OFF WAS FOUND AFTER LNDG. I KNOW BETTER THAN TO RESPOND WITHOUT CAREFULLY CHKING SWITCH POS DURING CHKLISTS. I'M EMBARRASSED. THIS EVENT RE- EMPHASIZES THE NEED TO RETURN TO BASICS WITH A NEW ACFT TYPE. CHKLISTS NEED TO BE VERIFIED CAREFULLY NOT JUST READ. I SUPPOSE BEING AN ATP AIRLINE TYPE I DIDN'T HAVE THE CORRECT MINDSET FOR FLYING THE LIGHT CIVILIAN TYPE ACFT. I DO NOW.
