Narrative:
We had just changed approach control frequencys in cvg. We were on vectors for the runway 18L visual approach, cleared to descend to 4000 ft. The copilot was flying. Passing approximately 6700 ft MSL we were advised for the first time of traffic at our 2 O'clock position, 6500 ft. No one had a visual on the traffic. We got a TCASII RA alert to climb. The copilot initiated the climb. I glanced at the TCASII screen again, which was on the 10 NM scale, and saw the target aircraft inside the 2 NM circle at 100 ft below us, and 12 O'clock position. I looked back outside and picked up what appeared to be a cherokee 6, 12 O'clock position, less than 1 mi, opposite direction. Upon passing overhead of the traffic we were about 7100 ft and initiating a leveloff. We received another advisory from approach control at this time. I replied that we were responding to a TCASII RA, were 7100 ft and descending back to 4000 ft and gave the target aircraft type and altitude to controller. We then accomplished a normal descent, visual approach, and landing runway 18L.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF B727-200 HAS TCASII ALERT AND CLBS FOR TFC AVOIDANCE. THEY HAD BEEN CLRED TO DSND TO 4000 FT AND THEN GIVEN ADVISORY OF TFC AT 6500 FT.
Narrative: WE HAD JUST CHANGED APCH CTL FREQS IN CVG. WE WERE ON VECTORS FOR THE RWY 18L VISUAL APCH, CLRED TO DSND TO 4000 FT. THE COPLT WAS FLYING. PASSING APPROX 6700 FT MSL WE WERE ADVISED FOR THE FIRST TIME OF TFC AT OUR 2 O'CLOCK POS, 6500 FT. NO ONE HAD A VISUAL ON THE TFC. WE GOT A TCASII RA ALERT TO CLB. THE COPLT INITIATED THE CLB. I GLANCED AT THE TCASII SCREEN AGAIN, WHICH WAS ON THE 10 NM SCALE, AND SAW THE TARGET ACFT INSIDE THE 2 NM CIRCLE AT 100 FT BELOW US, AND 12 O'CLOCK POS. I LOOKED BACK OUTSIDE AND PICKED UP WHAT APPEARED TO BE A CHEROKEE 6, 12 O'CLOCK POS, LESS THAN 1 MI, OPPOSITE DIRECTION. UPON PASSING OVERHEAD OF THE TFC WE WERE ABOUT 7100 FT AND INITIATING A LEVELOFF. WE RECEIVED ANOTHER ADVISORY FROM APCH CTL AT THIS TIME. I REPLIED THAT WE WERE RESPONDING TO A TCASII RA, WERE 7100 FT AND DSNDING BACK TO 4000 FT AND GAVE THE TARGET ACFT TYPE AND ALT TO CTLR. WE THEN ACCOMPLISHED A NORMAL DSCNT, VISUAL APCH, AND LNDG RWY 18L.
