Narrative:
While on base leg to runway 5 at gso, tower asked if we had the mooney at our 12 O'clock position in sight. We had 1 aircraft at our 1 O'clock position and another at our 10 O'clock position, both on final. We assumed the aircraft at our 1 O'clock position was the mooney and replied that we had the mooney in sight. We were told by tower to follow the mooney and we were cleared to land. When on a 2 mi final, my student saw a mooney directly below and to our left. I pulled the airplane up approximately 50 ft and reduced power. About 5 seconds later the tower informed us that we were too close to the mooney and ordered us to turn left for a downwind to runway 14, and we landed without further incident. The tower failed to inform us how many aircraft were on the approach. The tower never called out a distance from the mooney. Apparently, we were focusing on the runway when we should have been looking for traffic and the tower controller was not paying close attention to her radar screen. Both aircraft had discrete squawk codes on this sunday afternoon.

Title: INSTRUCTOR PLT GIVEN A TFC POINTOUT WITH CLRNC TO FOLLOW. THERE WERE 2 ACFT TOWARDS FINAL. THE INSTRUCTOR PLT AND HIS STUDENT PLT PICKED THE WRONG ACFT. NMAC ABOUT 2 MI OFF THE END OF THE RWY.
