Narrative:
After being cleared for the linden routing (sbound) along the west side of ewr, traffic was pointed out to me by tower and I was told to maintain visual. I was under the assumption the aircraft was landing at ewr's active into the wind (runway 22). The tower said that he told me the traffic was landing runway 11 but a downwind landing didn't make sense. Upon crossing the runway 11 centerline I looked down and saw the aircraft below me. The original aircraft appeared to have passed behind me (out of my sight). I mentioned the fact that we passed over the aircraft to tower not knowing it was the same one as before. The other aircraft was descending to runway 11 and was below me, therefore no evasive action was taken. Failure of the pilot to report 'lost visual contact' and failure of tower to make clear the intentions of the other aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: BELL JET RANGER PLT GETS A TA WHEN DEPARTING EWR VFR TO THE S. PLT ASSUMES TFC IS LNDG RWY 22 SINCE THE WIND FAVORS THAT RWY. PLT CROSSES CTRLINE OF RWY 11 AND HAS AN NMAC WITH ARR COMMUTER, THE ACFT THAT HAD BEEN POINTED OUT. TWR HAD FAILED TO ADVISE RWY ASSIGNMENT FOR LNDG COMMUTER.
Narrative: AFTER BEING CLRED FOR THE LINDEN ROUTING (SBOUND) ALONG THE W SIDE OF EWR, TFC WAS POINTED OUT TO ME BY TWR AND I WAS TOLD TO MAINTAIN VISUAL. I WAS UNDER THE ASSUMPTION THE ACFT WAS LNDG AT EWR'S ACTIVE INTO THE WIND (RWY 22). THE TWR SAID THAT HE TOLD ME THE TFC WAS LNDG RWY 11 BUT A DOWNWIND LNDG DIDN'T MAKE SENSE. UPON XING THE RWY 11 CTRLINE I LOOKED DOWN AND SAW THE ACFT BELOW ME. THE ORIGINAL ACFT APPEARED TO HAVE PASSED BEHIND ME (OUT OF MY SIGHT). I MENTIONED THE FACT THAT WE PASSED OVER THE ACFT TO TWR NOT KNOWING IT WAS THE SAME ONE AS BEFORE. THE OTHER ACFT WAS DSNDING TO RWY 11 AND WAS BELOW ME, THEREFORE NO EVASIVE ACTION WAS TAKEN. FAILURE OF THE PLT TO RPT 'LOST VISUAL CONTACT' AND FAILURE OF TWR TO MAKE CLR THE INTENTIONS OF THE OTHER ACFT.
