Narrative:
While on extended downwind for landing atl runway 27L at 3500 ft MSL, approach control advised traffic 11 O'clock and 4 mi. Visibility was poor. I reported 'no contact.' TCASII called 'traffic' and the altitude readout was the same as ours. Approach control called traffic at 11 O'clock and 1 mi and cleared us to climb. At the same time TCASII sounded 'climb, climb,' which we did. I observed an aircraft much like a bellanca viking pass closely beneath us (about 300 ft). We returned to our assigned altitude shortly. Approach control advised that we were in class B airspace but at its floor. I recommend that approach control vector IFR aircraft at altitudes at least a wing span above uncontrolled airspace.

Title: B757 IN THE CLASS B OF ATL HAS AN NMAC WITH A XING SMA AT THE SAME ALT OF 3500 FT. BOTH APCH CTLR AND TCASII ANNOUNCE THE TFC AND ADVISE A CLB FOR AVOIDANCE.
Narrative: WHILE ON EXTENDED DOWNWIND FOR LNDG ATL RWY 27L AT 3500 FT MSL, APCH CTL ADVISED TFC 11 O'CLOCK AND 4 MI. VISIBILITY WAS POOR. I RPTED 'NO CONTACT.' TCASII CALLED 'TFC' AND THE ALT READOUT WAS THE SAME AS OURS. APCH CTL CALLED TFC AT 11 O'CLOCK AND 1 MI AND CLRED US TO CLB. AT THE SAME TIME TCASII SOUNDED 'CLB, CLB,' WHICH WE DID. I OBSERVED AN ACFT MUCH LIKE A BELLANCA VIKING PASS CLOSELY BENEATH US (ABOUT 300 FT). WE RETURNED TO OUR ASSIGNED ALT SHORTLY. APCH CTL ADVISED THAT WE WERE IN CLASS B AIRSPACE BUT AT ITS FLOOR. I RECOMMEND THAT APCH CTL VECTOR IFR ACFT AT ALTS AT LEAST A WING SPAN ABOVE UNCTLED AIRSPACE.
