Narrative:
On departure, on runway heading (runway 6), approaching 1500 ft, I asked for on course to jfk VOR (267 degrees). Controller stated, turn right on course at 1600 ft. I started a left turn (which was the normal instruction) and asked the controller if he meant a left. He said no, he wanted a right turn. I had turned left 20-30 degrees by then, but immediately rolled into a right turn of about 250 degrees. Shortly thereafter he said I had made a left turn on course. I stated that I had started a left turn but after my clarifying request, I in fact did execute a complete right turn. At that point a new voice came on frequency. I asked if they had failed to notice that I did in fact execute a right turn. The new voice merely told me to proceed on course, and gave me a new frequency. Correction: I have challenged inappropriate left and right turn instructions and nearly always got an apologetic correction by ATC. When a turn is requested by ATC, which is the long way around, they should specify the approximately number of degrees of change to make it unmistakable.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF PA30 BEGINS TURN IN THE SHORTEST DIRECTION WHEN ISSUED A CLRNC TO TURN. MEANWHILE HE IS QUESTIONING CTLR INSTRUCTION TO TURN TO THE R. CTLR HOWEVER ACKNOWLEDGES THAT HE WANTS A R TURN. PLT MAKES R TURN BUT IS THEN ACCUSED OF TURNING THE WRONG WAY.
Narrative: ON DEP, ON RWY HDG (RWY 6), APCHING 1500 FT, I ASKED FOR ON COURSE TO JFK VOR (267 DEGS). CTLR STATED, TURN R ON COURSE AT 1600 FT. I STARTED A L TURN (WHICH WAS THE NORMAL INSTRUCTION) AND ASKED THE CTLR IF HE MEANT A L. HE SAID NO, HE WANTED A R TURN. I HAD TURNED L 20-30 DEGS BY THEN, BUT IMMEDIATELY ROLLED INTO A R TURN OF ABOUT 250 DEGS. SHORTLY THEREAFTER HE SAID I HAD MADE A L TURN ON COURSE. I STATED THAT I HAD STARTED A L TURN BUT AFTER MY CLARIFYING REQUEST, I IN FACT DID EXECUTE A COMPLETE R TURN. AT THAT POINT A NEW VOICE CAME ON FREQ. I ASKED IF THEY HAD FAILED TO NOTICE THAT I DID IN FACT EXECUTE A R TURN. THE NEW VOICE MERELY TOLD ME TO PROCEED ON COURSE, AND GAVE ME A NEW FREQ. CORRECTION: I HAVE CHALLENGED INAPPROPRIATE L AND R TURN INSTRUCTIONS AND NEARLY ALWAYS GOT AN APOLOGETIC CORRECTION BY ATC. WHEN A TURN IS REQUESTED BY ATC, WHICH IS THE LONG WAY AROUND, THEY SHOULD SPECIFY THE APPROX NUMBER OF DEGS OF CHANGE TO MAKE IT UNMISTAKABLE.
