Narrative:
Location: mia runway 9L. Mia runway 9L wind 100 degrees 17 KTS. Cleared onto the runway 9L behind a departing heavy A300. As we were getting into position, tower cleared us for takeoff. TCASII showed 2.5-3 mi. Queried the controller and was admonished severely for not starting the takeoff. Informed us that she can 'anticipate' the 5 mi spacing. After a brief dialog, we had 5 mi separation on TCASII and took off. Controller was extremely distracting with condescending scolding during a critical phase of flight, 500-1000 ft AGL. Part 1 is very specific that 'controller may not reduce or waive these intervals, 2 mins, 5 mi.' 1) can they really decide where they can measure the 5 mi separation from? I'm not as concerned with our separation at 1000 ft as I am at the point of rotation. 2) the tower controller scolded us like a red- headed step-child. It was not only irritating, but it was an unnecessary distraction and was a safety problem.

Title: CAPT OF B727 DELAYS TKOF BEHIND AN A300 WHEN ISSUED TKOF CLRNC AT 2 PT 5 TO 3 MI REF TCASII. CTLR TAKES EXCEPTION TO THIS AND AN ON AIR SCOLDING IS GIVEN TO FLC.

IT WAS NOT ONLY IRRITATING, BUT IT WAS AN UNNECESSARY DISTR AND WAS A SAFETY PROB.
