Narrative:
On oct/xa/97, I delivered our SW2 (merlin IIIB) to XXX in san antonio, tx, for a pre-purchase inspection. The inspection was to follow the guidelines of a C and D inspection with no corrective action or logbook entries made. On oct/xb/97, I was to pick up the airplane and deliver it to georgetown, tx, for further inspection and corrective action. That morning I checked with XXX service department to tow the aircraft out of their maintenance hangar. The director of maintenance said it was just being done. I met the airplane at the ramp where I conducted a very thorough preflight. I noted the aircraft's logbooks were in the aft baggage compartment. I did not inspect them since I was told no logbook entries were made. Besides I had just talked to the director of maintenance and he made no mention whatsoever about logbook entries even though he knew I was going to fly the aircraft. I flew the aircraft to WWW in georgetown, tx. While there I researched the logbooks for some entries that XXX said were not there. In fact I did find them to be entered correctly. The next day, oct/xc/97, I was looking through the logbooks and happened to turn to the last entry. I was shocked to find an entry by XXX stating that the airframe was found to be not airworthy and not approved for return to service. I realize that the PIC is responsible to determine if the aircraft is airworthy. What I can't understand is why nothing was said to me at XXX that the aircraft was not found to be airworthy when they knew I was going to fly it to another airport. A list of discrepancies was given me but they were listed as not being unairworthy items. To prevent this from happening again I will not trust anyone and check everything myself. I am just very disappointed they said nothing to me.

Title: PLT FLEW AN UNAIRWORTHY ACFT FROM SAT, TX. THE ACFT LOGBOOK FAILED TO BE CHKED TO ASSURE ALL NECESSARY ITEMS HAD BEEN CHKED SATISFACTORY.
Narrative: ON OCT/XA/97, I DELIVERED OUR SW2 (MERLIN IIIB) TO XXX IN SAN ANTONIO, TX, FOR A PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION. THAT MORNING I CHKED WITH XXX SVC DEPT TO TOW THE ACFT OUT OF THEIR MAINT HANGAR. THE DIRECTOR OF MAINT SAID IT WAS JUST BEING DONE. I MET THE AIRPLANE AT THE RAMP WHERE I CONDUCTED A VERY THOROUGH PREFLT. I NOTED THE ACFT'S LOGBOOKS WERE IN THE AFT BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT. I DID NOT INSPECT THEM SINCE I WAS TOLD NO LOGBOOK ENTRIES WERE MADE. BESIDES I HAD JUST TALKED TO THE DIRECTOR OF MAINT AND HE MADE NO MENTION WHATSOEVER ABOUT LOGBOOK ENTRIES EVEN THOUGH HE KNEW I WAS GOING TO FLY THE ACFT. I FLEW THE ACFT TO WWW IN GEORGETOWN, TX. I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND AN ENTRY BY XXX STATING THAT THE AIRFRAME WAS FOUND TO BE NOT AIRWORTHY AND NOT APPROVED FOR RETURN TO SVC. I REALIZE THAT THE PIC IS RESPONSIBLE TO DETERMINE IF THE ACFT IS AIRWORTHY. WHAT I CAN'T UNDERSTAND IS WHY NOTHING WAS SAID TO ME AT XXX THAT THE ACFT WAS NOT FOUND TO BE AIRWORTHY WHEN THEY KNEW I WAS GOING TO FLY IT TO ANOTHER ARPT. A LIST OF DISCREPANCIES WAS GIVEN ME BUT THEY WERE LISTED AS NOT BEING UNAIRWORTHY ITEMS. TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN I WILL NOT TRUST ANYONE AND CHK EVERYTHING MYSELF. I AM JUST VERY DISAPPOINTED THEY SAID NOTHING TO ME.
