Narrative:
While cruising at FL280 captain requested a left deviation to avoid a severe line of thunderstorms. Jacksonville ATC refused clearance and advised flight to turn right and remain on airway through WX. The WX from our position on the radar indicated a solid red contouring line of thunderstorms. Captain exercised emergency authority/authorized in the interest of safety of the aircraft and passenger. Made a left turn and avoided the severe line of WX.
