Narrative:
On nov/xx/97 at approximately XX35Z, air carrier X flight was at FL290 with ZMP on frequency 134.62. We received a clearance to FL310 and the clearance was read back with no response from center. Passing FL300, center stated, 'air carrier X, there's been a cross-up here, descend back to and maintain FL290.' we stated that we received a clearance to FL310 and it was read back. Center stated that the clearance to FL310 was for an air carrier Y. At that time we had not heard an air carrier Y on our frequency. We descended to FL290 and I asked if there was a problem with what happened. The controller stated 'no problem, there's no traffic conflict involved.' air carrier Y then came to our frequency. This could be a case of the controller working 2 frequencys and our readback blocked by the controller receiving 2 readbacks at once. I also believe the controller gave air carrier X air carrier Y's clrncs!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B727 RESPONDED TO THE WRONG CALL SIGN AND CONSEQUENTLY STARTED CLBING WHEN THE CLRNC WAS FOR ANOTHER ACFT WITH A SIMILAR SOUNDING CALL SIGN. ATC INTERVENED TO CORRECT THE RPTR'S MISTAKEN REACTION. HOWEVER, ATC DID NOT NOTICE THE ERROR DURING THE FLC'S READBACK.
Narrative: ON NOV/XX/97 AT APPROX XX35Z, ACR X FLT WAS AT FL290 WITH ZMP ON FREQ 134.62. WE RECEIVED A CLRNC TO FL310 AND THE CLRNC WAS READ BACK WITH NO RESPONSE FROM CTR. PASSING FL300, CTR STATED, 'ACR X, THERE'S BEEN A CROSS-UP HERE, DSND BACK TO AND MAINTAIN FL290.' WE STATED THAT WE RECEIVED A CLRNC TO FL310 AND IT WAS READ BACK. CTR STATED THAT THE CLRNC TO FL310 WAS FOR AN ACR Y. AT THAT TIME WE HAD NOT HEARD AN ACR Y ON OUR FREQ. WE DSNDED TO FL290 AND I ASKED IF THERE WAS A PROB WITH WHAT HAPPENED. THE CTLR STATED 'NO PROB, THERE'S NO TFC CONFLICT INVOLVED.' ACR Y THEN CAME TO OUR FREQ. THIS COULD BE A CASE OF THE CTLR WORKING 2 FREQS AND OUR READBACK BLOCKED BY THE CTLR RECEIVING 2 READBACKS AT ONCE. I ALSO BELIEVE THE CTLR GAVE ACR X ACR Y'S CLRNCS!
