Narrative:
Taxiing to active runway for takeoff, taxiway side of hold line painted or tarred black. Hold lines faded. By the time hold lines were observed, was unable to stop before partially crossing. Stopped, continued over lines so aircraft could be turned around and returned to ground side of taxiway. Signs indicating 'hold' lines at each intersection would help preclude such incursions. Also, as lines fade, they should be repainted or use of permanent tape would help. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states that part of the problem may be that he usually flies a helicopter into this airport. Thus he does not have to worry about hold lines at the runway. In this case however, it was the lack of visible hold lines that created his problem. Taxiway B goes directly into the runway at an angle. He was anticipating some kind of runup area with hold lines and/or hold signs. None were there.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AIR TAXI CARGO PLT OF PA23 DOES NOT SIGHT THE HOLD LINES UNTIL HE HAS CROSSED THEM. MOVED ON SO ACFT COULD BE TURNED AROUND.
Narrative: TAXIING TO ACTIVE RWY FOR TKOF, TXWY SIDE OF HOLD LINE PAINTED OR TARRED BLACK. HOLD LINES FADED. BY THE TIME HOLD LINES WERE OBSERVED, WAS UNABLE TO STOP BEFORE PARTIALLY XING. STOPPED, CONTINUED OVER LINES SO ACFT COULD BE TURNED AROUND AND RETURNED TO GND SIDE OF TXWY. SIGNS INDICATING 'HOLD' LINES AT EACH INTXN WOULD HELP PRECLUDE SUCH INCURSIONS. ALSO, AS LINES FADE, THEY SHOULD BE REPAINTED OR USE OF PERMANENT TAPE WOULD HELP. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THAT PART OF THE PROB MAY BE THAT HE USUALLY FLIES A HELI INTO THIS ARPT. THUS HE DOES NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HOLD LINES AT THE RWY. IN THIS CASE HOWEVER, IT WAS THE LACK OF VISIBLE HOLD LINES THAT CREATED HIS PROB. TXWY B GOES DIRECTLY INTO THE RWY AT AN ANGLE. HE WAS ANTICIPATING SOME KIND OF RUNUP AREA WITH HOLD LINES AND/OR HOLD SIGNS. NONE WERE THERE.
