Encountered unforecasted icing in clouds. Unable to maintain assigned altitude on IFR flight. It finally was necessary to make landing at livingston, tn, via IFR approach to avoid further icing. After encountering initial ice, should have pursued alternative. Instead, continued thinking situation would improve -- it didn't

Narrative: ENCOUNTERED UNFORECASTED ICING IN CLOUDS. UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ASSIGNED ALT ON IFR FLT. IT FINALLY WAS NECESSARY TO MAKE LNDG AT LIVINGSTON, TN, VIA IFR APCH TO AVOID FURTHER ICING.
