Narrative:
Location: 30 mi northwest swf. Approach assigned 'cross filps intersection at 6000 ft.' I was the first officer and the PF. We discussed the tight restr since we were already close to filps and still high. We were then passed to another controller on frequency 132.75 who turned us to a 170 degree heading direct swf and down to 3000 ft. The heading and altitude were read back. Passing about 5000 ft approach issued a rapid, garbled clearance. We asked him to repeat and he said stop your descent. Autoplt was disconnected and just then we had 1 terrain alert from the GPWS. We were asked what altitude we were given and we replied 3000 ft. Approach said he gave us 6000 ft. He then said to maintain 5000 ft. We were at 4700 ft and climbed back to 5000 ft and continued our approach to swf. I need to add that on our clearance to 170 degrees and down to 3000 ft we were told that we were on a vector to a visual approach runway 27 at swf. Review of the only approach to runway 27, a VOR, showed an MSA of 4700 ft for our direction of arrival.

Title: FLC OF S80 IS GIVEN A XING RESTR THEN SECOND CTLR ISSUES A HEADING AND ALT WITH NO REQUEST TO MAINTAIN THE XING RESTR. THE CREW WAS TOLD THIS WAS A VECTOR FOR A VISUAL APCH. CTLR THEN TOLD THEM TO STOP DSCNT AS THEY HAD A GPWS ALERT.
Narrative: LOCATION: 30 MI NW SWF. APCH ASSIGNED 'CROSS FILPS INTXN AT 6000 FT.' I WAS THE FO AND THE PF. WE DISCUSSED THE TIGHT RESTR SINCE WE WERE ALREADY CLOSE TO FILPS AND STILL HIGH. WE WERE THEN PASSED TO ANOTHER CTLR ON FREQ 132.75 WHO TURNED US TO A 170 DEG HDG DIRECT SWF AND DOWN TO 3000 FT. THE HEADING AND ALT WERE READ BACK. PASSING ABOUT 5000 FT APCH ISSUED A RAPID, GARBLED CLRNC. WE ASKED HIM TO REPEAT AND HE SAID STOP YOUR DSCNT. AUTOPLT WAS DISCONNECTED AND JUST THEN WE HAD 1 TERRAIN ALERT FROM THE GPWS. WE WERE ASKED WHAT ALT WE WERE GIVEN AND WE REPLIED 3000 FT. APCH SAID HE GAVE US 6000 FT. HE THEN SAID TO MAINTAIN 5000 FT. WE WERE AT 4700 FT AND CLBED BACK TO 5000 FT AND CONTINUED OUR APCH TO SWF. I NEED TO ADD THAT ON OUR CLRNC TO 170 DEGS AND DOWN TO 3000 FT WE WERE TOLD THAT WE WERE ON A VECTOR TO A VISUAL APCH RWY 27 AT SWF. REVIEW OF THE ONLY APCH TO RWY 27, A VOR, SHOWED AN MSA OF 4700 FT FOR OUR DIRECTION OF ARR.
