Narrative:
I departed tbr in georgia, was cleared as filed by savannah approach, V157 to lal, direct bow, fl. At the onset the transponder became inoperative. I maintained altitude and airway. I was frequently requested to report altitude and location. Jax approach advised me I was cleared to webbs intersection and contact tpa 119.9, maintain 5000 ft. I contacted tpa approach, checking in at 5000 ft at webbs intersection. Tpa advised roger, giving no further instructions. Almost immediately after reporting to tpa, all traffic on the frequency was told to stand by for 10 mins due to a lost aircraft. I continued sbound. Not being told to hold at webbs or expect further clearance, I thought I was reporting in due to the transponder problem. I later was told to contact tpa by phone, which I did. I then learned I had exceeded my clearance at webbs intersection. I advised tpa that I misunderstood my limit was at webbs. In the future I will be more careful and request specific instructions if confusion exists. I am thankful to tpa calling this mistake to my attention. I will not allow this to occur again.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: INST RATED PVT PLT FAILED TO HOLD WHERE DESIGNATED BY ATC AND CONTINUED ON TOWARD HIS DEST EVEN THOUGH ATC HAD INSTRUCTED ALL ACFT TO STAND BY DUE TO A LOST ACFT.
Narrative: I DEPARTED TBR IN GEORGIA, WAS CLRED AS FILED BY SAVANNAH APCH, V157 TO LAL, DIRECT BOW, FL. AT THE ONSET THE XPONDER BECAME INOP. I MAINTAINED ALT AND AIRWAY. I WAS FREQUENTLY REQUESTED TO RPT ALT AND LOCATION. JAX APCH ADVISED ME I WAS CLRED TO WEBBS INTXN AND CONTACT TPA 119.9, MAINTAIN 5000 FT. I CONTACTED TPA APCH, CHKING IN AT 5000 FT AT WEBBS INTXN. TPA ADVISED ROGER, GIVING NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER RPTING TO TPA, ALL TFC ON THE FREQ WAS TOLD TO STAND BY FOR 10 MINS DUE TO A LOST ACFT. I CONTINUED SBOUND. NOT BEING TOLD TO HOLD AT WEBBS OR EXPECT FURTHER CLRNC, I THOUGHT I WAS RPTING IN DUE TO THE XPONDER PROB. I LATER WAS TOLD TO CONTACT TPA BY PHONE, WHICH I DID. I THEN LEARNED I HAD EXCEEDED MY CLRNC AT WEBBS INTXN. I ADVISED TPA THAT I MISUNDERSTOOD MY LIMIT WAS AT WEBBS. IN THE FUTURE I WILL BE MORE CAREFUL AND REQUEST SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS IF CONFUSION EXISTS. I AM THANKFUL TO TPA CALLING THIS MISTAKE TO MY ATTN. I WILL NOT ALLOW THIS TO OCCUR AGAIN.
