Narrative:

We were in the approach phase of flight, to land on runway 5R at raleigh-durham. I was cleared to descend to 8000 ft on a downwind (right) still on vectors. Checking ahead for sequence traffic I missed my assigned leveloff at 8000 ft and did not catch it until approaching 7500 ft. I immediately corrected to 8000 ft. The visibility was very good and both the first officer and I were looking out of the cockpit. In hindsight, I believe I should have assigned the duty of looking for traffic to the first officer instead of both of us taking it upon ourselves to do so.
