Narrative:
Cleared to taxi to runway 25R after crossing runway 25R at taxiway A5. I taxied off the taxiway and onto an unlit dirt area that I couldn't see until the last moment. I was able to turn to the left and re-enter the taxiway. There was no damage to the aircraft. Because I was looking briefly for where to turn to join taxiway A5 and the fact that it was dark and the hazardous area was unlit caused me to enter it. This area needs to be lit with blue taxi lights or barricades for nighttime operations. We continued our taxi and takeoff.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A B737-200 STRAYED OFF THE TXWY INTO A GRAVEL AREA DURING TAXI FOR TKOF AT NIGHT. THE SURFACE WAS HARD ENOUGH FOR THE ACFT TO TAXI BACK ONTO THE TXWY UNDER THE ACFT'S OWN PWR. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE ACFT AND THE RPTR SUBSEQUENTLY TOOK OFF WITHOUT INCIDENT.
Narrative: CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 25R AFTER XING RWY 25R AT TXWY A5. I TAXIED OFF THE TXWY AND ONTO AN UNLIT DIRT AREA THAT I COULDN'T SEE UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT. I WAS ABLE TO TURN TO THE L AND RE-ENTER THE TXWY. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE ACFT. BECAUSE I WAS LOOKING BRIEFLY FOR WHERE TO TURN TO JOIN TXWY A5 AND THE FACT THAT IT WAS DARK AND THE HAZARDOUS AREA WAS UNLIT CAUSED ME TO ENTER IT. THIS AREA NEEDS TO BE LIT WITH BLUE TAXI LIGHTS OR BARRICADES FOR NIGHTTIME OPS. WE CONTINUED OUR TAXI AND TKOF.
