Narrative:

Shortly after leveling off at FL290, near adoor intersection, the #3 engine oil filter bypass light came on. All other engine indications were normal. The checklist call for precautionary shutdown. We performed the checklist and headed to atl. Mco was closer, but our dispatcher requested we go to atl for better passenger service. I agreed with the dispatcher because fuel was no problem, WX was good both places, we would be over land at about the same time with an airport below us (jax), and we would be lighter in atl, and the engine was usable if we needed it. The rest of the flight was normal. After landing, maintenance changed the filter and bypass switch and checked the chip detectors. No metal or carbon found. Engine was returned to service.

Title: B727 #3 OIL FILTER BYPASS LIGHT CAME ON JUST AFTER LEVELOFF. FLC PERFORMED CHKLIST, SHUT DOWN THE ENG AND DIVERTED TO THE BEST SUITABLE ARPT.

Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER LEVELING OFF AT FL290, NEAR ADOOR INTXN, THE #3 ENG OIL FILTER BYPASS LIGHT CAME ON. ALL OTHER ENG INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL. THE CHKLIST CALL FOR PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN. WE PERFORMED THE CHKLIST AND HEADED TO ATL. MCO WAS CLOSER, BUT OUR DISPATCHER REQUESTED WE GO TO ATL FOR BETTER PAX SVC. I AGREED WITH THE DISPATCHER BECAUSE FUEL WAS NO PROB, WX WAS GOOD BOTH PLACES, WE WOULD BE OVER LAND AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME WITH AN ARPT BELOW US (JAX), AND WE WOULD BE LIGHTER IN ATL, AND THE ENG WAS USABLE IF WE NEEDED IT. THE REST OF THE FLT WAS NORMAL. AFTER LNDG, MAINT CHANGED THE FILTER AND BYPASS SWITCH AND CHKED THE CHIP DETECTORS. NO METAL OR CARBON FOUND. ENG WAS RETURNED TO SVC.
