Narrative:
After landing on runway 16L at jan, turned right on taxiway C3 and then attempted an acute turn onto taxiway C, northbound. Right main departed taxiway. Both engines were shut down after APU power established. 9 passenger and 5 flight attendants were deplaned via airstairs and bussed to terminal. Fuel was xferred out of right wing into left wing (6500 pounds). Aircraft was towed backward onto taxiway C3 and then onto gate xa. Factors contributing to this occurrence were: 1) poor placement of taxi lights. 2) mist covered side window. 3) long crew day in difficult conditions, ie, 4TH actual instrument approach and thunderstorms and turbulence throughout southeast. Supplemental information from acn 387980: the aircraft was subsequently towed to the gate, where a maintenance inspection indicated that the aircraft had not been damaged. Notes: misjudgement by captain of turn radius for 150 degree turn. No taxiway centerline stripes from taxiway C3 to taxiway C (northbound) to assist crew in making turn. Taxiway edge lights located in grass, 10 ft off taxiway edge. Terribly deceptive on dark nights.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A B757 DROPPED A MAIN GEAR OFF TXWY HARD SURFACE WHILE MAKING A 150 DEG TURN FROM ONE TXWY TO ANOTHER DURING TAXI IN TO PARKING. ACFT WAS STRANDED AND WAS TOWED TO THE GATE AFTER FLT ATTENDANTS AND PAX WERE DEPLANED ON THE TXWY.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG ON RWY 16L AT JAN, TURNED R ON TXWY C3 AND THEN ATTEMPTED AN ACUTE TURN ONTO TXWY C, NBOUND. R MAIN DEPARTED TXWY. BOTH ENGS WERE SHUT DOWN AFTER APU PWR ESTABLISHED. 9 PAX AND 5 FLT ATTENDANTS WERE DEPLANED VIA AIRSTAIRS AND BUSSED TO TERMINAL. FUEL WAS XFERRED OUT OF R WING INTO L WING (6500 LBS). ACFT WAS TOWED BACKWARD ONTO TXWY C3 AND THEN ONTO GATE XA. FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THIS OCCURRENCE WERE: 1) POOR PLACEMENT OF TAXI LIGHTS. 2) MIST COVERED SIDE WINDOW. 3) LONG CREW DAY IN DIFFICULT CONDITIONS, IE, 4TH ACTUAL INST APCH AND TSTMS AND TURB THROUGHOUT SE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 387980: THE ACFT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY TOWED TO THE GATE, WHERE A MAINT INSPECTION INDICATED THAT THE ACFT HAD NOT BEEN DAMAGED. NOTES: MISJUDGEMENT BY CAPT OF TURN RADIUS FOR 150 DEG TURN. NO TXWY CTRLINE STRIPES FROM TXWY C3 TO TXWY C (NBOUND) TO ASSIST CREW IN MAKING TURN. TXWY EDGE LIGHTS LOCATED IN GRASS, 10 FT OFF TXWY EDGE. TERRIBLY DECEPTIVE ON DARK NIGHTS.
