Narrative:
We were cleared for the NDB approach and told to report graye inbound. At graye we reported but there was no response from tower. The radios were checked and we tried to raise tacoma tower and ZSE. No response. We squawked 7600 and climbed back to 2000 ft to remain VFR. We got a hand held radio out and tried to contact tower or center. No response. We were preparing to land at a VFR airport. The airplane radios suddenly started working after 10 mins. We asked for vectors to renton and landed. The radios were reported to maintenance. The hand held was found to have a broken wire.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PVT PLT WORKING ON HIS INST RATING WITH A CFI TEMPORARILY LOSES COM RADIO WHEN CALLING TACOMA TWR. AFTER NO RESPONSE RPTR TRIED ZSE. A HAND HELD RADIO WAS TRIED WITH SAME NEGATIVE RESULTS. FINALLY, AFTER A VFR DIVERSION ATTEMPT ZSE FINALLY RESPONDED TO ACFT'S RADIO AND FLT WAS VECTORED TO RENTON. THE HAND HELD RADIO WAS ALSO FAULTY.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR THE NDB APCH AND TOLD TO RPT GRAYE INBOUND. AT GRAYE WE RPTED BUT THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM TWR. THE RADIOS WERE CHKED AND WE TRIED TO RAISE TACOMA TWR AND ZSE. NO RESPONSE. WE SQUAWKED 7600 AND CLBED BACK TO 2000 FT TO REMAIN VFR. WE GOT A HAND HELD RADIO OUT AND TRIED TO CONTACT TWR OR CTR. NO RESPONSE. WE WERE PREPARING TO LAND AT A VFR ARPT. THE AIRPLANE RADIOS SUDDENLY STARTED WORKING AFTER 10 MINS. WE ASKED FOR VECTORS TO RENTON AND LANDED. THE RADIOS WERE RPTED TO MAINT. THE HAND HELD WAS FOUND TO HAVE A BROKEN WIRE.
