Narrative:
The fdad radar display at the jfk departure position (J-108) failed without warning. The alphanumerics froze then disappeared on 3/4 of the display -- a highly unusual event. Airway facility technicians reported computer 'suicide alerts' indicated a 'stroke display controller' (sdc) failure. There was training in progress on the position. The instructor and developmental moved over to the scope on their right (J-110) which is one of the two final monitor scopes (not presently in use). However, the controller working jfk departure handoff (J-109) was then unable to do many of the required functions of a handoff controller because J-109 is 'slaved' to j- 108, and J-110 does not have a handoff position. No notice radar display failures are becoming more and more frequent, at least once a week. It is only going to be a matter of time before something horrible happens, unless we get new radar displays.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RPTR CLAIMS FDAD RADAR DISPLAY FAILED REQUIRING INSTRUCTOR AND DEVELOPMENTAL MOVING TO OTHER POS.
Narrative: THE FDAD RADAR DISPLAY AT THE JFK DEP POS (J-108) FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THE ALPHANUMERICS FROZE THEN DISAPPEARED ON 3/4 OF THE DISPLAY -- A HIGHLY UNUSUAL EVENT. AIRWAY FACILITY TECHNICIANS RPTED COMPUTER 'SUICIDE ALERTS' INDICATED A 'STROKE DISPLAY CTLR' (SDC) FAILURE. THERE WAS TRAINING IN PROGRESS ON THE POS. THE INSTRUCTOR AND DEVELOPMENTAL MOVED OVER TO THE SCOPE ON THEIR R (J-110) WHICH IS ONE OF THE TWO FINAL MONITOR SCOPES (NOT PRESENTLY IN USE). HOWEVER, THE CTLR WORKING JFK DEP HDOF (J-109) WAS THEN UNABLE TO DO MANY OF THE REQUIRED FUNCTIONS OF A HDOF CTLR BECAUSE J-109 IS 'SLAVED' TO J- 108, AND J-110 DOES NOT HAVE A HDOF POS. NO NOTICE RADAR DISPLAY FAILURES ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE FREQUENT, AT LEAST ONCE A WK. IT IS ONLY GOING TO BE A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMETHING HORRIBLE HAPPENS, UNLESS WE GET NEW RADAR DISPLAYS.
