Narrative:

We flew into aus on dec/xa/97 and out on thursday, unfortunately without the logbook. During preflight the captain and I mentioned the fact that this is the same aircraft and continued with the preflight. We then accomplished the first part of the checklist through shoulder straps and just short of seat belt sign. At that time we were distracted by the boarding process. The seat belt sign was illuminated and we pressed on with the prior to engine start checklist. Thereby omitting the logbook/flight forms items. I think the fact that we discussed the same aircraft and therefore filled the square in our minds. Then in the rush to get an on time departure we overlooked a very important item. Why do logbooks leave the aircraft? This problem has bit crews in the past and I've read about them in reports. I swore this would never happen to me. I always check the write-ups and compare the nose number on the logbook with the sel, flight plan, tps, and forward panel placard, except of course this time. This incident has shaken me. I place a great amount of self worth in my piloting skills and job performance, and now something I'm watching for bites me.

Title: F100 FLC MISUSE THEIR CHKLIST WHEN READING IT AND FAIL TO COVER THE PORTION PERTAINING TO THE LOGBOOK REVIEW. LOGBOOK IS LEFT BEHIND WHEN THEY DEPART AUS, TX. FLC WAS DISTRACTED WITH THE BOARDING PROCESS.

WHY DO LOGBOOKS LEAVE THE ACFT? THIS PROB HAS BIT CREWS IN THE PAST AND I'VE READ ABOUT THEM IN RPTS. I SWORE THIS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN TO ME. I ALWAYS CHK THE WRITE-UPS AND COMPARE THE NOSE NUMBER ON THE LOGBOOK WITH THE SEL, FLT PLAN, TPS, AND FORWARD PANEL PLACARD, EXCEPT OF COURSE THIS TIME. THIS INCIDENT HAS SHAKEN ME. I PLACE A GREAT AMOUNT OF SELF WORTH IN MY PILOTING SKILLS AND JOB PERFORMANCE, AND NOW SOMETHING I'M WATCHING FOR BITES ME.
