Narrative:

No narrative included with report. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter was the lead cabin attendant on the flight. She said that she noticed smoke just after the 10000 ft chime when she started to enter the galley area to prepare the service. She looked down the aisle and saw a thin haze of smoke coming from the air conditioning vents. She notified the captain and he indicated that the flight would be returning to ord and that she should prepare the cabin for a possible evacuate/evacuation. She said that both the flight crew and the attendants briefed the passenger about the return and the possible evacuate/evacuation. During the evacuate/evacuation preparation the reporter noticed that the smoke was abating. She said that she entered the flight station and informed the captain. The flight crew had her open the door and when they looked down the aisle the air was then clear, she said. The flight crew then canceled the emergency and started a climb en route. A short time later she heard the sound of a bang and the aircraft moved she said. She again entered the flight station and the captain said that an engine had failed and they were returning to ord and she was to prepare the passenger for a possible evacuate/evacuation again. The passenger were again briefed by the flight crew and the attendants. After landing the flight crew said to remain seated and they briefed the attendants that an evacuate/evacuation would not be necessary. She said that she briefed the passenger that they would be returning to the gate. She said that the passenger were very nice and calm through the whole series of events. The reporter also said that the flight crew were to have submitted ASRS reports.
